Best Time to Book a Photographer Before Your Hawaii Trip

You’ve booked the flights. You’re comparing resorts, saving beaches on your phone, and starting to picture what your Big Island vacation will actually look like.

So when should you book your photographer?

The simplest answer is: once your Hawaii travel dates and accommodations are confirmed, it’s a good time to start looking.

You don’t need to have your entire itinerary planned. In fact, booking your photography session earlier can make the rest of your vacation planning easier because you can reserve a good evening for photos before dinners, excursions and other activities fill your schedule.

As a photographer in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, I work with many families and couples who are visiting the island rather than living here. Here’s how I recommend fitting photography into your Hawaii travel plans.

Book Your Photographer After Your Travel Dates Are Confirmed

You don't need to choose a photographer before booking your Hawaii trip.

But once you know your arrival and departure dates, there is usually no advantage to waiting until the last minute.

Your photographer can help with details you may not know yet, including the best time for your session and a location that makes sense based on where you're staying.

If you already know that family photos, maternity portraits or couples photography are something you want from your trip, treat the session like any other vacation activity you don't want to miss.

Reserve it, then plan around it.

Why Earlier Booking Makes Your Vacation Easier

One of the biggest benefits of booking ahead has nothing to do with photography itself.

It gives you options.

Instead of squeezing a session into the only remaining opening, you have a better chance of choosing a day that works naturally with your family's plans.

That can be particularly helpful if you are coordinating:

  • young children's schedules

  • grandparents or extended family

  • dinner reservations

  • luaus and excursions

  • day trips around the Big Island

  • wedding or anniversary celebrations

You came to Hawaii to enjoy your vacation. Your photo session should fit into it rather than complicate it.

Don't Schedule Photos for Your Arrival Day

Even if your flight is supposed to arrive early, I generally don't recommend planning your family photography session for the same day you land in Kona.

Travel is unpredictable.

A delayed flight, missing suitcase or long rental-car line can quickly turn a beautiful sunset session into something stressful.

And even when everything goes perfectly, everyone may simply be tired.

Give yourself some time to arrive, unpack and settle into Hawaii.

For many families, the second or third day of the trip can work beautifully.

There's another small advantage: you haven't had much time to get sunburned yet.

Don't Necessarily Save Photos for Your Last Night Either

The opposite strategy can create its own problems.

If you leave your photography session until the final evening of your vacation, there isn't much flexibility if weather or another unexpected issue changes the plan.

Whenever possible, I prefer having at least a little room in the itinerary.

That doesn't mean we need multiple days reserved for photography. It simply means your session doesn't have to compete with your flight home the next morning and the final-night rush of packing.

Think About Sunset Before You Fill Your Dinner Schedule

A lot of families visiting Kona want those warm, golden Hawaii photographs they have seen online.

That light happens around sunset — which is also when restaurants get busy and families often plan dinner.

If sunset photos are important to you, book the photography session first and make your dinner reservation around it.

The exact session time will depend on the season and location, so don't worry about calculating it yourself. I can recommend the timing once we know your dates.

Traveling With Young Children? Your Best Time May Be Different

The prettiest light isn't useful if your toddler is exhausted.

For families with babies and younger children, I always consider the child's normal routine when planning a session.

If you're traveling from the mainland, the time difference can also affect sleep during the first part of your vacation.

Sometimes sunset works perfectly. Sometimes an earlier or morning session is the much better decision.

There isn't one schedule that works for every family.

What If You're Visiting During a Busy Travel Period?

If you're coming to the Big Island during a school break, holiday or another popular travel period, I recommend reaching out earlier.

The reason is simple: there are only so many sunset sessions available in a week.

This matters even more if:

  • your travel dates aren't flexible

  • you have a large extended family

  • you want a specific type of location

  • you're planning a proposal, elopement or intimate wedding

  • photography is an important part of the trip

The more specific your plans are, the more useful early booking becomes.

What If Your Hawaii Trip Is Already Coming Up?

Still ask.

An upcoming trip doesn't automatically mean it's too late to book a photographer in Kona.

Schedules change, dates open up, and there may be availability that works perfectly for your family.

Send your travel dates, where you're staying and the type of session you're interested in. From there, we can see what is possible.

What Should You Know Before Contacting a Big Island Photographer?

Not much.

You don't need to arrive with a Pinterest board, know the best Kona beaches or decide exactly what everyone will wear.

To get started, it helps to know:

Your Hawaii travel dates
When are you arriving and leaving?

Where you're staying
Kailua-Kona, Keauhou, Waikoloa, the Kohala Coast or another part of the Big Island?

Who will be photographed
A couple? Immediate family? Grandparents and several households?

What you're celebrating
A family vacation, anniversary, maternity trip, proposal, wedding or simply time together?

From there, I can help with the photography details.

Make Photography Part of the Trip, Not Another Vacation Task

The best Hawaii sessions aren't complicated.

You don't need an elaborate plan. You need a beautiful place, good light and enough time to relax together.

Booking your photographer once your trip is confirmed gives you the freedom to choose a session that fits naturally into your vacation — and then stop worrying about it.

If you're planning a trip to Kailua-Kona or the Big Island of Hawaii, I'd love to help you create photographs that feel like your time here.
