Anaehoomalu Bay Family Photography: The Best Time for Family Photos on the Big Island
If you’re planning a family photoshoot on the Big Island of Hawaii, Anaehoomalu Bay (A-Bay) is one of my favorite locations for families with young children. After photographing families around the Big Island for years, I especially recommend visiting the bay in the morning, when the beach is peaceful, the light is beautiful, and kids have plenty of space to explore.
Why I Recommend Anaehoomalu Bay for Family Photos
The Big Island has some incredible beaches, but many of them are rocky, difficult to access, or require a short walk to reach the best photo locations. For families with small children, that can make a photoshoot more challenging.
Anaehoomalu Bay is different. The beach is relatively easy to access, with plenty of open space where children can run, play, and explore without parents having to constantly worry about uneven lava rocks or difficult terrain.
That freedom makes a big difference during family photography. Instead of asking children to stand still and pose, I can let them move, play, and interact naturally while I capture those real family moments.
The Best Time for Family Photos at A-Bay
For families, I often recommend a 7:00 or 8:00 AM photoshoot at Anaehoomalu Bay.
Morning light at the bay can be absolutely beautiful. The sun is just coming up, creating soft and fresh light that works especially well for colorful family portraits. Early in the morning, the beach is also generally much quieter than it is later in the day.
Another advantage is the ocean. In typical morning conditions, the water can be calmer, with less wind and fewer waves. Of course, Hawaii's weather and ocean conditions can always change, but mornings are often a great choice when you want a more peaceful beach experience.
For families with young children, there is another bonus: kids are usually happier earlier in the day. A morning session can be much easier than trying to keep little ones smiling after a full day at the beach, pool, or resort.
A Variety of Backgrounds in One Location
One of the reasons I love photographing families at Anaehoomalu Bay is the variety of scenery.
You don't have to stay in one spot for the entire session. The area offers beautiful combinations of:
Soft sandy beach
Tall Hawaiian palm trees
Black lava rocks
Blue ocean
Green tropical vegetation
Open beach areas for walking and playing
This variety allows me to create a gallery that doesn't look like every photo was taken in the same place. We can move naturally from one background to another and create both colorful family portraits and more candid photographs of your family interacting together.
The combination of tropical greenery, blue water, golden sand, and dark lava rock gives your photos a distinctly Hawaiian feel without needing a complicated setup.
Morning or Sunset: Which Is Better for Your Family?
Anaehoomalu Bay is beautiful at sunset, too. The warm evening light can create romantic and dramatic family photographs, especially when the sun is low over the ocean.
However, sunset is also a much busier time at the beach. Many visitors come to Anaehoomalu Bay to watch the sunset, walk along the beach, or enjoy dinner at Lava Lava Beach Club.
Lava Lava Beach Club can actually be a fun option if you're celebrating something special with your family. You can plan your family photos around sunset and then continue the evening with dinner and drinks by the ocean.
But if your priority is a quieter beach, fewer people, and bright, colorful family photos, I would choose the morning.
Why Morning Works So Well for Families With Kids
Family photography doesn't have to mean standing in one place and smiling at the camera.
My goal is to give children room to be themselves. At Anaehoomalu Bay, they can run along the sand, explore the shoreline, play with their parents, and simply enjoy being at the beach.
Those little moments often become my favorite photographs.
Parents don't need to worry about making every photo perfect. I will guide your family throughout the session, suggest where to walk and where to stop, and look for natural moments as they happen.
This is especially helpful if your children are young or don't usually enjoy posing for photographs.
Planning Your Big Island Family Photoshoot
If you're staying in Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, or along the Kohala Coast, Anaehoomalu Bay is a beautiful option for family photography.
For families traveling with young children, I would personally choose a 7:00 or 8:00 AM session whenever possible. You can enjoy the softer morning light, a more peaceful beach, and plenty of space for your children to explore.
